LAURA GRACE (OLDFIELD) FORD
Project - Savage Messiah
Resurfacing, writing, collecting, unpolished history of London changing. Reminds me of my in London post-undergrad in 2008 when I lived near the Olympic site. Throws up questions of legacies of politics (section 28, Thatcherism etc), subcultures, who decides what is valued? Neoliberalism in action. This work values DIY, mix-media aesthetic, using the style to be political, captures the people and communities moved at will be developers/councils.

The Republics, 2020 (screened the other night as part of Imagining an Island Symposium). The film interweaves experiences of place, memory, landscape & language. The film is like a poem, it encapsulates so much in a short amount of time, without over-explaining. The poems were written in the 80s and published in 2016 and the film made over the past 2 years. The sense of time is long and immediate as the poet revisits Uist where he lived for 3 years in a Shepherd's Cottage, in the 70s, struggling to find traces of himself there in the present day.
Breathe & rhythm were particularly intriguing themes in the film.
