Style inspiration: Claire Tolan - ASMR & feminism - "the creepy priestess"
Although technology remains her main concern conceptually, Tolan states a desire to contort the gendered roles she performs, citing Judith Butler and Donna Haraway as influences: “I play with the feminised role until it becomes a caricature of femininity, a ‘creepy priestess.’” This uncanny intimacy combined with the role of “creepy priestess” unsettles the assumption of a reassuring and pleasurable ASMRtist–listener relationship, and in this sense, I argue that she playfully disrupts gendered notions of care, while not satirising the ASMR community, or devaluing care work.
